What is Photosynthesis and why is it Important?

Photosynthesis is a natural process that allows plants to make their own food. It is one of the most fundamental and important subjects of science because without it, plants would not survive and there would be no life as we know it. Photosynthesis converts the sun’s energy into food for the plant. This food will be used to help the plant grow, develop, and remain healthy. The majority of photosynthesis occurs in the leaves, where the green pigment (chlorophyll) can be found. Photosynthesis needs four basic components to occur. These components work together in a simple yet powerful manner. The four components that are necessary for photosynthesis to occur are: Once these four components are combined, the result is the production of glucose, the food for the plant. As a by-product of photosynthesis, oxygen is released into the atmosphere. Photosynthesis typically occurs during the day when sunlight is available. Thus, plants will grow best when they obtain adequate amounts of light. Photosynthesis will either slow or stop without adequate amounts of sunlight. This process not only is vital to the survival of plants, but is also essential for the survival of animals and people.
